Growing up in an artistic and creative family has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. My dad, Jason Garcia (Okuu Pin), has always been an inspiration — not just as a father but as an artist who continues to push the boundaries of Tewa storytelling through his work. So when he asked me to photograph him in his home studio for an article in Southwest Contemporary, I was honored.
Capturing my dad in his element — surrounded by his tools, materials, and unfinished works — felt like a full-circle moment. I’ve spent my life watching him create, and now I had the chance to frame his process through my own lens. There’s something special about photographing someone you know so well; you see the quiet details, the familiar expressions, and the deep focus that drives their work.
The photoshoot was a mix of documenting his workspace and highlighting the artistry behind his storytelling. My dad’s work is a blend of tradition and modernity, and I wanted to make sure that came through in the images. Seeing the final article come together with my photographs alongside his words was a proud moment for both of us.
